Classic Game Gems: Doom (PS1 Version) 15 Minutes Game Play
Doom is a landmark 1993 first-person shooter video game by id Software. It is widely recognized for having popularized the first person shooter genre, pioneering immersive 3D graphics, networked multiplayer gaming, and support for customized additions and modifications via packaged files in a data archive known as "WADs". Its graphic and interactive violence, as well as its Satanic imagery, also made it the subject of considerable controversy.
In Doom, players assume the role of a space marine who must fight his way through a military base on Mars' moon, Phobos and he must kill the demons from Hell.
Note: Love doom but never like the one that is on the console (PC shooter here). This PS1 version which I own have couple stuff change.
One is the music. No more famous music you love in Doom. It's now more of those spooky music which just make you feel even more cautious (which isn't what you want as you want to be pump to kill the monster).
Another is the control. The PS1 control is something you wish can be improve. They were basically the D-pad movement which isn't the greatest thing but not much you can do when they don't have the dual shock control which we take for granted. The best way to play this is a mouse and the PS1 does have the choice to use the Sony mouse (which not many games use that).
Third (and last) is the graphics. I am not expecting to be perfect but the PS1 is a bit darker than the PC. This will be worst in certain map where they isn't light in the area, which make you moving around almost impossible. You better increase your TV lighting if you want to play those area as you can't do it on the PS1.
They are few more issue in this game but those isn't much of an issue for me so no point to post it here. Even with this issues, the game is still fun to play and it's really Doom. The experience is no different if you play it on the PC or the console (unless you play it on the 32X or the 3DO). It's a fun shooting game where you just go to point A to point B while they is hundreds of monsters waiting to kill you along the way. What's wrong with that?
