Clayfighter 63 1/3 - Bad Mr. Frosty Playthrough
"CALL ME DADDY!!!"
Clayfighter 63 1/3 is the third entry in the ill-fated Clayfighter series and it was released for the Nintendo 64. Despite the game being a mixed bag back when it was released, I actually enjoy the game for being a smorgasbord of gameplay ideas from other games. The game features gameplay systems from Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, and even parodies those games to a tee including Mortal Kombat's Fatality (dubbed Claytality in this game). It's essentially MUGEN before MUGEN was a thing only without the needed polish. The gameplay can be rough around the edges at times, but it is still playable, and the humor can be amusing at best or annoying at worst.
That being said, one of the other drawbacks to this game is the lack of replay value. Apart from the main gameplay, it doesn't have the additional tournament mode that the Tournament Edition of the first game and the second game had in the first place. It's a shame considering that out of all three entries, 63 1/3 is my favorite in terms of gameplay. In addition, some of the humor hasn't really aged that well, along with some characters being stereotypes that don't fly in today's world (Kung Pow comes to mind).
Ultimately, what didn't help the game, in the long run, is its history of being released in an unfinished state; there were more characters meant to be part of the final roster, but they were omitted until the release of Sculptor's Cut, which was a Blockbuster exclusive. However, I personally didn't like Sculptor's Cut that much due to the fact that there were caveats involved after most of the scrapped characters were added. These caveats involve the removal of certain special attacks that link together with combos (and therefore nerfing certain combo opportunities), and it only served to make the game less enjoyable for me. Personally, I think it makes Sculptor's Cut a downgrade for me despite my liking of replacing the Z-axis movement in favor of an immediate back dash. I get this is due to hardware limitations, but it's still a bummer either way. It would be interesting to see what would happen if the game were to be completed in its intended form, but one can only imagine now.
In this video, I play as Bad Mr. Frosty in the Psycho difficulty. With that said, sit back, relax, and enjoy!
