Code R (Quintet - Sega Saturn)
Footage from Code R replay mode.
Code R (コード・アール) is an interesting mix between adventure and racing game developed by Quintet/Team Seven and published by ESP/Quintet in July 1998 (Quintet funded the creation of ESP with other developers such as Game Arts and Treasure to publish their own games).
As you can see from the video , which resembles an anime episode, Code R is heavily inspired by the manga Initial D, the story in the adventure part is similar and the racing part consists of one vs one mountain hill races.
While the adventure part is obtuse if you don't understand japanese the racing part is quite good and playable and can be accessed directly from the main menu.
3D graphics are good enough for a Saturn game, with good framerate and a smart use of the textures to fake lightning effects (on the street and cars) while 2D graphics is all rendered using Saturn high resolution.
There are others one vs one mountain hill racing game on Saturn such as Initial D by Genki and Touge King the Spirits 2 by Cave but Code R remains my favorite one thanks to the good and believable AI, good framerate and interesting physics model.
Footage was taken using the emulator SSF 0.12 (NOT real hardware) therefore it has a few glitches.
