The Red Army did not cpature Warsaw untill January 1945, more than three months after the Wehrmacht crushed the Polish Home Army´s desprerate uprising. With this forces abandoning the Polish capital, Hitler established a Festung (fortress) in the western city of Poznan. Here a Wehrmacht garrison supported by the 9th Army would attempt to hold off the advancing Red Army. Poznan was build around a medival citadel that the Germans used as a last line of defense, but stone walls and ramparts could not stop the soviet advance. Isakovich wrote of the Red Army´s reckless assault and the tenacity of its cornered enemy.
