"Commando" is a run-and-gun arcade game released by Capcom in 1985. Designed by Tokuro Fujiwara, it became a major success and influenced many later shooter games. It was laster ported to many platforms, including the NES.

In the game, you control a soldier named Super Joe, starting in a jungle after being dropped off by a helicopter. Armed with an assault rifle with unlimited ammo and a limited supply of hand grenades, you must fight your way through hordes of enemy soldiers. While the rifle can fire in any direction, grenades are thrown vertically towards the top of the screen to clear obstacles and take out multiple enemies at once.

At the end of each level, the action stops, and you face several soldiers streaming from a gate or fortress, led by a cowardly officer who runs away when shot in the back. Along the way, you have the option to free prisoners of war being transported by the enemy.

The game contain hidden underground shelters that can only be accessed with grenades. Inside these shelters are prisoners for the player to rescue. Some of these ports also include items. Among the items included are a more powerful machine gun upgrade, an unlimited grenade upgrade, and "glasses" to let the player view all the hidden bunkers. The player will lose these upgrades after losing a life.

The added powerups and depth to the gameplay makes the NES version an improvement over the original arcade version.
