American Gladiators, developed by Incredible Technologies and released in 1991 by GameTek for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), with ports arriving in 1992 for Amiga, Genesis, Super NES, and MS-DOS, brings the thrill of the 1989 TV game show to video gaming.

The NES version deviates significantly from the other platforms and the show itself. Events are transformed into side-scrolling and overhead mini-levels only loosely resembling real-life challenges. Players engage in jousting battles atop platforms, leaping across platforms in between. The Human Cannonball requires precise timing to defeat gladiators while the platform elevates, adding difficulty. Gladiators scream amusingly when knocked off platforms.

The Wall presents numerous screens with handholds and footholds, while gladiators attack throughout the level. Assault involves hitting a moving gladiator target. Powerball tasks players with scoring balls in baskets, earning extra lives for outstanding performance.

The Eliminator, a rigorous final round, combines I-beams, handbikes, medicine balls, and zip lines, providing an intense finish to the game.

The Genesis and SNES versions follow the show more closely, featuring a tournament mode and new events like Atlasphere.

Despite criticism, American Gladiators remains an intriguing relic of the 90s, offering nostalgic fun for those who seek a taste of the iconic TV show in video game form.
