Delta – Developed by Stavros Fasoulas and published by Thalamus in 1987. Also knows as Delta Patrol (US?) and Delta Charge on the ZX Spectrum in 1990.

“If only you had known what you were letting yourself in for, when, seduced by the uniform, camaraderie, promises of willing damsels in every colony, and under the influence of more than a few beers, you signed up for a three year stint with DAMOCLES. Now you’re having second thoughts…… Trade vessels of the Terran Merchant Fleet have been disappearing with alarming regularity in a special backwater known only as DELTA and marked as ‘unmapped’ on the charts. Rumours suggest the cause is the dreaded Hsiffan Khanate, and guess who control has ‘volunteered’ to find out if the rumours are true….”

With Sanxion behind us, work began on Delta and raised the bar for shoot em ups on the C64 again. Although it doesn’t say it on the box, I think delta is still linked to Sanxion in that you are still a pilot for Damocles? The Longplay opens up with the introduction of Mix-E-lode which allows you to piece together a tune from some premade elements. It’s a nice distraction while the game loads. Then after the title screen music plays out we get into the game. The game offers Music or SFX. I choose music as its quite a long piece that you hear twice through the video. The sfx are the usual c64 sounds for shoot em ups and the likes.

The game puts you through 32 levels of fast paced hard hitting hell. Another well presented game that is fast and smooth and so are the enemies. This is 1987 and developers are starting to push the hardware now and this game is doing its part by using both the upper and bottom border for score and weapon hud. Speed boost is a powerup that should be gotten early but don’t overdo it as too many and it resets back to stage 1 and you can hardly move then. The weapons do ware out over time so even after you have levelled them up, you may still have to collect them again later. Weapons are purchasable at various points in the levels but you need to collect credits by killing alien waves and hopefully have enough for the weapon you want. An annoying issue is that if you don’t spend them, you lose them … It can be a real challenge to get the shield powerup. Also not all enemy waves drop a credit when destroyed and some even take credits away when destroyed!

There are some real painful levels later on and if you are not powered up, you’re not getting past them. Weapons have a tendency to ware out just as you need them most and the next power up collection point seems lightyears away. After 32 levels are complete the game loops.. No congrats screen or credit roll, just your sense of pride and accomplishment. The music does change to represent your victory though.
