Hunters Moon, developed by Martin Walker and Published by Thalamus in 1987.
“Lost in Space. Surrounded. Strange structures that build themselves – hive-like. And at their core alien Starcells …. Must get Home. Back to Hunter’s Moon. Must … survive! Am attacking now – full thrust – cannons locked in – FIRE! Little do you know what you face: 128 levels of galactic mayhem. Hope you are a CLEVER psychoblaster – or else …”
This is one of those games that you want to enjoy but it feels like the game doesn’t want you to progress. It has a tonne of content but it doesn’t want you to see it. I used to play this game in burst sessions as it can annoy quickly. The game has 16 levels(Systems) and each one contains between 4 and 9 hives. 128 possible levels in total. However you don’t need to complete every level. You can figure out which are the easiest ones and just play those and that’s where the come back for more replay ability comes in. Try another route! For the Longplay I just picked at random but did not play every level. They are so similar nothing is lost by not showing them. At the start of each level you get a few seconds to collect a starcell represented by a flashing dot on your mini map. If you collect in time you get part of a 4 letter code to warp to the next system. It is possible just to play 4 levels in each system to complete as quick as possible. In each hove is usually 4 starcells to collect.
The main enemy to avoid are the white worker cells which repair any parts of the hive you have destroyed but there are others that are launched at you. On some levels their maybe solid walls and these can be annoying to navigate as you need to pass through any opening’s with pixel precision. Between each system is a bonus level where you can claim an extra life if you make it through. You can collect shields to help with some difficult parts such as when there is lots of enemies around and this is accessed from the pause/option screen. You can also choose the colour of your ship here.
At the end of the game, our first end screen in a Thalamus game! Setting the bar in presentation once again. I am a little disappointed that it didn’t use your high score entry though instead of just calling you ‘The Hunter’. Also, just to note the game has been recently re-released with an extra 50 levels (I’m not sure we needed more!) and comes with an intro and outro as well as some other additions for some extra polish.
