Battle Valley, developed by Hewson and published by Rack-It in 1988.

"The summit was successful. An arms treaty has been signed. All medium range missiles have been destroyed ... except for two which have been captured by a group of Terrorists who plan to destroy the Western World unless their fellow terrorists are released from a penitentiary in the United States. Your task, as a mercenary employed by the United States Government, is to capture the terrorist bases in their desert outposts - Battle Valley - and eliminate the two missiles."

One of my favorite games on the c64. At the start you get to choose sfx or music and are locked in until you return to the title screen. The sfx is ok but nothing special. The music is a stand out piece and really helps drive the game. Once in the game you take control of a tank or helicopter. Using either one you need to clear the way to the bridge then using the helicopter, collect a pontoon using the winch and repair the bridge allowing for the tank to go over to the next station. There are 3 stations on each side of the level which serve to repair your tank as well as moving up your base. Further on you will find the missile to destroy. There is on on each side. destroy both to win the game!

Because their is a lot going on in the air, it is a good idea to start with the tank to clear out radar stations and missile launchers. This clears the way for the helicopter. It can be a good idea to kill some targets while in the helicopter but it is very easy to take damage or crash into something. It is a balancing act for when best to use the tank or helicopter. Only the tank can take bases and destroy the missile. Once one missile is destroyed, the del/inst key can be pressed to return to the central base ready to take on the other side. Ammo can be collected between bases but it should still be used sparingly. Run out and you are in trouble. There is no lives limit but should you be destroyed, you will lose 5 minutes on the countdown timer. Time is gained by capturing bases.

I use the default control method which allows double tapping fire plus direction to change speed. It has its annoyances as when not holding a direction it turns the tank and stopped it. Can be annoying when trying to fire fast at an enemy.

I think this is a great game helped by its music and it looks good for its time. The game doesn't have to be rushed as as long as you don't die too often, there should be plenty of time. Some enemies cant be shot due to their positioning, but they can hit you as you go over them which can be annoying. In the longplay after game completion, I show a few minutes of gameplay with sfx as well as the bad ending once the countdown has run out.
