Commodore 64C Diagnostics - Trying Cartridges & A Joystick U2 Bad 6526 Mysterious! - Episode 2441
Time to put in a couple of cartridges and see if thing seem to be working on this Commodore 64C...also, a good time to test the joystick that was in the basket of goodies I just got...what could possibly go wrong? Sometimes each question produces so many more...onward to OMEGA RACE on the C64!
Connecting the keyboard to this disassembled Commodore 64C, and giving it a try on the SD card reader that I got for the PET, but it does seem to have a serial port connector! I still have much to learn about this new and different way of loading and saving. World of Commodore test program...see you there!
I let the commodore 64 sit for a good number of hours after treating it with the DEOXIT, not that I needed to, but I had other things to do and I continued with the testing...but it got strange...very strange...as you will see...but in the end, I think I have got the culprit sorted out...and it was not either harness...and I can not totally confirm the cause yet, but I am pretty sure I have located the weakest link and the faulty component...a long video to be sure...but this is the process of patiently getting to the bottom of things...enjoy!
I was really going to dig into the 2040 disk drive, but I think I will explore this 64...and I will use the Diagnostic Harness made by Retro Rewind! To find out more about them, go to RetroRewind.CA and have a look at the things they create, make and sell...the ports on this computer look a bit dull, but we shall see how this all works out...and if this computer is alive or dead...first of course I need to check out the power supply...and for that I will use the voltage checker meter that Rudy of @RudysRetroIntel made for me...it lets me know what the 5 volt side is reading...and if it is too high, or too low, the cables get snipped...too high and the computer will be damaged...the 9 volt side can also be dangerous, but I have never had a 64 killed by it...if I turn it on, after checking the 5 volt side and the 9 volt is bad, typically you see nothing but hear a loud buzzing sound...if that happens, turn it off, cut off the wires and never use it again...anyway, time to hook up a 1702, and see what is what...maybe I will need to get out the irons...maybe not...always interesting...thanks for having a look!
Time to open up this newly acquired Commodore 64C...I have no clue if it works, but before I plug it in without looking inside, that could cause troubles if there is something in there that might short something out...so, first I need to find a TORX 10 bit...because, that is what holds the outer case and the shield on the board in place...makes it more difficult for people to get inside which is I think what commodore wanted...anyway, time to look inside...and then see what is what...and if this computer might work, or if it will need surgery...
I really try not to get things...I really try...but sometimes it just can not be helped...so, here is a basket of things that I got this morning...everything will need to be tested, and I will get into that...but not at this moment...first, it is time to unbox everything and see what is in the basket...enjoy!
The Toronto PET Users Group will be holding the World of Commodore in 2024! For all the specifics to this moment and details, go to the link below!
