Commodore Bits & Bytes - Using Some Of The 1541 Diagnostics In The RETROREWIND Cart - Episode 1349
There are many steps along the way when it comes to testing any old computer equipment...but there is a cartridge I got at the World of Commodore that does seem to really help and it has a variety of tests, and the best sound checking routines I have found...it is by RETROREWIND.CA and indeed, it is a good thing...and it has a reset switch on it!
I did many other things to get this drive going...as you will or have seen, but these programs, all within the cartridge were nice to have available and close at hand!
Before seeing about testing the switches, I have to see if the disk drive works...hard to do much testing on a broken drive...you can figure out the device number switch as long as the unit is communicating and not just spinning...anyway, sometimes, after 20-30 or more years of sitting, it does take a bit of repetitive instructions to get these old things up and running...stay tuned!
I was back in the garage...and indeed, there was another 1541 disk drive...this one the person had been brave and violated the sacred Commodore warranty, so I need to test the drive and see if it works and if the switches still do what they were designed to do...if you recall, and I meant to mention this in the video, the last version of this drive, the 1541-II had dip switches as did the 1571 and the 1581...too bad the first several million of these were not so equipped...
