Copyright Alert System Goes Live
What is the "Copyright Alert System" and what will it do? Well, likely...not much for the time being. The Center for Copyright Information, which includes members from the Recording Industry Association of America and the Motion Picture Association of America are teaming up with ISPs to send people alerts if illegally shared copyrighted material is passed through their internet connection.
People will see a series of strikes for each infringement, escalating to the point in which ISPs will throttle internet connection speeds. Is there room to exploit this? What is the point to this all besides "educating" and slowing down users? For now, that's it, but there may come a time when copyright creators (who are in the CCI) may push for more severe backlash, or even file lawsuits. This is definitely a threat to privacy, and shouldn't be taken lightly, no matter how ineffectual it is at its present state.
