We want to be safe, and in search of safety the countries of the world in the face of covid closed down much of the economy. Yet a Lancet study confirmed that global deaths from alcohol are 2.8 million deaths annually. Three times the current number of deaths from Covid and if we wanted to be safe and save lives all we have to do is stop drinking.
Is the reality that we pretend to want to be safe when someone else is responsible. But when left to our own devices and desires we frequently chose risk instead? Or do we want safety but just don't realise that routine activities are dangerous?

Sunetra Gupta is an infectious disease epidemiologist and a professor of theoretical epidemiology at the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford.
David Director Friedman is an economist, physicist, legal scholar, and anarcho-capitalist theorist. He is known for his textbook writings on microeconomics and the libertarian theory of anarcho-capitalism, which is the subject of his most popular book, The Machinery of Freedom.
Indira Jaising is an Indian lawyer who is noted for her legal activism in promoting human right causes. In 2018 she was ranked 20th in the list of 50 Greatest Leaders of the World by Fortune magazine.
