It seems coupling a medium reactor to a large shield allows it to shield more damage than with a large reactor. I think the medium reactor shorter travel distance, faster handheld battery charging time and more granular recharging (more crews are allowed to fill the battery slots since they are smaller) suffise to compensate it's smaller battery size (3 to 2).
