50Could This NEWS Be the End of Bungie? #shorts. Could this be the end of Bungie looming in the next few years? If you haven't heard, Bungie recently announced the layoff of about 100 employees or 8% of the company because of a 45% loss from projected profits. It also forced them to delay Final Shape another 4 months to June of 2024. While Bungie takes responsibility for this action and loss, it might be possible that the layoffs were recommended by its parent company, Sony. It’s also possible that these projected profits were too high to begin with and doomed to fail, but Lightfall did suffer significantly as a major DLC.
Even then, Destiny and Bungie as a whole have been very profitable. Why such drastic actions? My guess is because of Marathon, their new game which was also pushed back, now to release in 2025. It feels like they were set to make Marathon their new focus with Destiny 2 as a funding force. However, with the negative reception of Marathon, the waning player base and profits from Destiny 2, and now layoffs, we have to assume they are going to be getting desperate to make things work. I have no doubt they are going to bust their asses to make Final Shape a great finale to the Light and Dark saga. But where do they go from there? Will Destiny 3 be the ticket, and how long will that last? Will Marathon scratch the surface, or sink and drown? Could this be the end of Bungie looming in the next few years.
