But every time you go out and come back you have to go from chest to chest to keep it all nice and neat. Using sorting machines can help automate inventory management and make this process a lot smoother.

You can build sorting machines at a workbench and they don't take much. A spring, a cogwheel, and a titanium ingot. I also highly recommend some high-speed conveyor belts to help chain the sorting machines together.
At the sorting machine control panel, you set to exclude the item or include or allow all to go through (or none). When you place this properly you can have it output into a chest with an absorber and have all of your inventory sorted for you.
I also recommend setting up a chest to drop items into the sorting channels and that way when you are ready to dump your inventory you don't have to go chest to chest.
