Even classic video games have their crappy bosses. Not surprisingly, so do mediocre ones. The Quartz Quadrant boss battle from Sonic CD, for the SEGA CD, is no exception.

So what makes this boss battle "crappy"? It's not even a boss battle per se, but more of a endurance test that would be more suited to an oversized guinea pig. You don't even hit Robotnik except at the start to begin this 'boss battle'.

The idea is to run on this treadmill to gain speed, which causes friction with Robotnik's machinery, and eventually cause it to malfunction. There's more. Apart from the spikes that close off the battle arena, the only attack is a series of balls that try to 'home-in' on Sonic, and bursts into four smaller projectiles when making contact with the ground. Once you learn the pattern and timing, it's very easy to dodge. Run on the conveyer belt, time the incoming attack, jump over it easily, and repeat. No causing damage to his machine, it just eventually malfunctions, which makes you question why anyone would build a contraption that is flawed. Just like many other Sonic CD bosses.

Generally, Robotnik attempts to hit you with seven of his attacks, but there is a way to make this battle go a little quicker. If you get the invincibility found on the upper route close to the boss room, you can quickly run into ideal position next to Robotnik, and essentially tank two attacks, just before it runs out. What is it with Sonic CD and it's insistence to give you an extra life and at least one invincibility power-up, in a short Boss Act?

It's unique sure, like most of the Sonic CD bosses. Unfortunately for this game, they suck. Repetitive. Boring. You don't really attack Robotnik. Gives you invincibility to make it even easier! It's like the final boss from Sonic 1, only they decided to make it much less of a threat, and make it seem like Robotnik beat himself, rather then overcoming the odds.

You can tell I don't really like this game...
