A related off-shoot to my Crappy Videogame Boss Battles. Where boss battles are so counter-productive and laughably flawed, you wonder how they were designed in the first place.

So what makes this a "retarded" boss battle? It starts innocently enough. The first phase, where it doesn't attack you, sees you chase after Robotnik/Eggman in an infinitely-looping area. It's bad enough that Tidal Tempest is too similar to Labyrinth Zone from Sonic 1, but it has a similar element where you have to chase him, although a lot less treacherous.

After landing four hits, the Egg-O-Matic malfunctions (?), and a wall that previously keeps you in the same loop will open up, leading to a short path that drops down into an underwater arena. This is the real boss battle, and where it gets truly retarded.

When you confront the real boss of this zone, Robotnik (I just prefer to call him that) surrounds himself with a dozen or so air bubbles to protect himself. Bear in mind, you are UNDERWATER. Gobbling up the air bubbles will gradually weaken his defences. This is the only way to prevent Sonic from drowning. Think that through for a minute...

As for his attacks; well, he only has one. Shooting four projectile balls at you at a slow pace. While sucking up an air bubble while he attacks can leave you vulnerable, they are easy to dodge, even when submerged in water.

There is however, a very easy way to avoid his attack: stay in either corner of the arena, and simply jump over them. Robotnik tends to stay up high when shooting his projectiles when moving away from you, but swoops low when moving towards you. The latter can see you easily take three air bubbles away, while putting you in minimal danger of getting hit.

Curiously, if you completely remove all his air bubbles, Robotnik does NOT re-spawn more, as is widely believed. He will be completely defenceless, but Sonic will have no air bubbles left to consume, and will drown unless you end it. Fortunately, there is no danger of that, because it only takes ONE HIT ( I kid you not) and it's all over.

I get that some people may find it creative, and to a extent it is different, but an underwater battle where you are given the very air bubbles needed to prevent drowning, has to been seen as counter-productive. Retarded even. Goodbye Labyrinth Zone wannabe.
