Wow. Just wow.

So many incredible entries. Seriously, everyone, Stone and I had a very tough time choosing a winner.

It boiled down to the following criteria:
1) Originality
2) Viability
3) Backstory

I hope you'll agree, that our good friend Grackleflint has really nailed it! His post is below. Please welcome me in congratulating Grackleflint for his awesome character entry, Soldato!

Original Text:

Name: Soldato (Italian for soldier)

Build: Melee - 40 Strength/50 Dexterity, other stats to your own taste, but avoid spell casting in general. If you do use magic, save it for buffs and protection only.

Main Weapons: Halberd +10, Twin Dragon Greatshield +10, Composite Bow +10, Mace +10, Falconer Helm, Hard Leather Armor, Gloves, and Boots (warrior starting gear)

Rings: Royal Soldier’s Ring, Life Ring, Ring of Steel Protection, Old Leo Ring

Background:

Soldato is a former Volgen soldier who defied their reputation for being timid and weak. He was brave, honorable, and a master of the halberd; he never shirked his duty or ran from battle. He chafed at the presence of the Falconer mercenaries. He detested their haughty ways and their impractical shields. One day while setting up camp, a Falconer decided to make Soldato (known back then as Domenico) the target of his ire. They had just lost a skirmish and he was looking for someone to blame. After Domenico ignored his taunts the Falconer threw a glove in his face and challenged him to a duel. Domenico accepted and without armor or weapons, disarmed the Falconer with a tent pole and sent him sprawling into the mud. He took the Falconer’s helm as a prize and warned him to keep his distance from now on.

That night when Domenico was coming back from his shift on watch, the Falconer approached him again, however now he had two of his comrades in tow. They spread out to flank him but this time he was armed with his halberd and greatshield. The fight was savage and swift, and though Domenico defeated all three Falconers, he was gravely wounded. The noise drew the attention of some nearby mercenaries, and for the first time in his life, Domenico ran. He grabbed some meager supplies from the gate and disappeared into the night. Dizzy from blood loss, he quickly became lost in the woods and collapsed outside of a small cottage. When he awoke he was inside the cottage lying on a palette bed, and miraculously his wounds had already begun to close. The cottage’s sole inhabitant was an old crone. She gave him cold water and stale bread and nattered on telling strange tales of a far off forgotten land. As she spoke he felt a strange pull as if he were drawn to this land…Drangleic she called it.

He donned his armor and prepared to venture out—to find this new land and make a fresh start away from war and adversity. As he stepped through the door the crone asked him what he was called in his homeland. Domenico then realized that he couldn’t remember. He stood for a long time at the threshold, the rain pattering on his helm. “Soldato” he muttered. “I am Soldato.” before disappearing into the mist.
