Creating waterfalls
This is another tutorial video on basic waterfall designing using the TGC2019 course designer editor. This can actually be used in any game editor for that matter and not just this game.
Ok to begin with this is a simple introduction to creating waterfalls, it's not the definitive or correct way of doing it. it's more my interpretation of how to do waterfalls. There are many talented level designers out there who are much better than me at this, but someone has requested this, so here it goes.
Normally it only takes me half an hour or so to do something like this, the process that takes the longest believe it or not is knowing where to start. In this video rather than select a spot to start from, I have created a starting point. Normally I tend to create waterfalls after I have laid the tees and pins down, I then look around to see what features would look good or lend itself to a waterfall.
Depending on the waterfall there are just one or two simple rules to follow, and I can't say this enough, keep it simple, the more complicated you try to make it the more of a muddle you'll end up in and you'll end up giving up or creating something that doesn't look or feel right.
Waterfalls should be inspiring and are supposed to enhance an already great looking course, well that's my opinion anyway LOL!
Joking aside you need to ask yourself if you really need one on your course, how many real-life courses do you know have waterfalls?
Let us get back to basics and remember that waterfalls are a force of nature, well the big ones anyway, so ask yourself before you start how big do you want your waterfall creation to be, will it be part of the course as a hazard or just eye candy for your course. The only limitation is your imagination. Remember that too many can also detract from its initial impact, so limit it to no more than 3 at the most, 2 is plenty IMO.
Remember that the waterfall must have a start and a finish, in other words, it needs a source, such as a river or a hidden lake inside a mountain, etc. Use your imagination, but make it believable, unless of course your designing a fantasy one.
Remember that you can hide stuff using rocks and other objects such as bushes and trees or other plants available to you, don't forget that you can also manipulate the terrain around your creation, so don't be afraid to experiment, its one of the ways you'll learn.
One important thing to remember is that you'll only improve through trial and error, learn from your mistakes and do plenty of research, its what the internets for.
Anyway no matter what you do and how you create your waterfall, have fun doing it.
