CrossCode - FINALE: Completing the Track
I have some fond memories with this game. I played the original demo on Newgrounds back in 2013 (I think) and knew I would buy it. Combat was good, premise interesting, music solid. And now it's finally complete.
(It's a shame no one saw it live.)
Ratings time:
Gameplay: 9.2/10
The game's strongest point. It has a high skill ceiling if you can to perfect your skills and fun enough for less skilled players to enjoy. This game has puzzles. Many, many, MANY puzzles. It would make a Legend of Zelda game jealous. They were even nice enough to added a timed puzzle difficulty slider. The circuit/element system is good and the different special moves you can choose can change up how you play a bit. I'm not sure how else to gush about the gameplay. I just find it quite fun.
I will say though, getting a full 100% in this game would be a chore for whoever attempts it.
Story: 8.5/10
Another strong point in this game. It's hard to explain why I like the story without going into spoilers. The main characters you see are pretty unique and even some NPCs are interesting and fun to listen to. Sidequest stories are mostly forgettable, with a few exceptions. Another note, they left the ending open ended enough to where they can plausibly make a sequel, or another addition to the game. Although they said there are no plans for it, people can dream.
Sound: 8/10
The devs nailed that they were going for in the soundtrack. The OST is very diverse and hits that 16-bit era vibe with enough wubs to fit the future setting. The attack sound effects sound like they are from the same era of games as well. I will say that the one track that made me flat out disappointed was that the final boss track didn't feel as epic as I think it could have been. It isn't bad, just not epic in my mind.
Graphics: 9/10
They went for a pixelated art style and just nailed it. There's plenty of diverse environments in the different worlds and dungeons. And a big shout out to the tier 3 elemental moves and the boss sprites.
Other Stuff:
The game doesn't really have a post-game (unless you count the DLC) but there's some challenging content a player can sink their teeth into in the arena, or in NG+ if they want to limit themselves.
Overall: 8.8/10
Crosscode is a very under-the-radar indie game for how good it is, at least compared to other big hits from the indie scene. More people should play and enjoy this game. It's a fun 60+ hour experience for 20 bucks or less when on sale.
