VICE's Patrick Klepek has published a really cool look at the indie game Cruel World - and how players have subverted the expectations of its creator.

Developed by Droqen, Cruel World is a 'masocore platformer' with a persistent game world, where players can take selfish actions to make the game miserable to play for everybody else. Throughout the levels are terminals that act as save points. However, these reset if you leave the game. Players can 'hack' these terminals to allow for future immediate access. But in doing so, it makes the hacking process more difficult for every other player after that (upwards of 15 minutes). After releasing on 1 Apr 2021, the expectation was that the game would essentially be unplayable after the first 24 hours, and Droqen would remove the game from sale. The community has defied expectations, with players taking philanthropic approaches to playing the game, roleplaying, working together, modding, etc. The experience has left Droqen with a more positive view of what players are willing to endure.
