At your recommendation, I check out the latest release from the Crunchbang team: Crunchbang Waldorf or v. 11. Overall, very responsive and stable, perfect for intense CPU production tasks - or just a really minimalist setup!
Either way - it's worth a shot, especially if you have limited hardware.
