I take a look at the Xfce member of the Ubuntu 13.10 family with Xubuntu: the Saucy Salamander. This distro has a surprising amount of power and customization considering it is classed as a lightweight distribution. Excellent machine for slightly older hardware, but still enough customization for power users. Excellent operating system all around, very stable, stays out of your way, and is a pleasure to use.
