I take a look at Canonical's fall release: Ubuntu 13.10: Saucy Salamander. While there is plenty of effort and emphasis on Ubuntu's mobile future, what has changed on the desktop. Unfortunately, not that much. But it's an incremental improvement to a flagship open-source project.
