Cuphead - How to Beat Grim Matchstick in Fiery Frolic Walkthrough Strategy Guide
363CUPHEAD: GRIM MATCHSTICK STRATEGY GUIDE - REGULAR DIFFICULTY
Recommended loadout: lobber, chaser, energy beam, smoke bomb
As you fight Grim, you are standing on cloud platforms that continually move to the left. Always be looking ahead for the next safe platform to jump to.
PHASE 1
The lobber is a good weapon for this phase, since it does high damage and can hit Grim from almost anywhere on the screen.
Grim's attacks are fairly slow and easy to avoid once you're familiar with them. The rings he shoots from his eyes always fire straight at you, so prepare to move (parry the pink one if possible). When he inhales to blow out a fireball, back away to the left half of the screen to give yourself room to avoid it.
The most important thing to watch for in this phase is the spear attack from Grim's tail. Listen for the "wobble" sound and check the bottom of the screen to see where the attack will come from. Make sure you're behind the tail or far enough in front of it that your current cloud won't carry you into it.
PHASE 2 [0:35]
Grim is now on the left side of the screen, which means you need to constantly jump away from him while still attempting to damage him (the chaser can help with this). Don't attempt to land on Grim's tongue (it will damage you). Keep an eye on the line of marching fireballs; if one of them stops in place (they make a high-pitched vocal sound when they do this), get ready for it to jump at you in an arc.
PHASE 3 [1:00]
Despite having three heads, Grim's attacks are not terribly furious in this phase. The heads spit slow-moving fireballs that are easy to dodge. However, without warning the middle head can morph into a flamethrower and spit a line of fire across the center of the screen. Stay above or below the center line to avoid this.
