Curt Ramm is one of the preeminent horn players in rock and roll. As well as being an in-demand studio session player, Curt’s playing has kept him very busy over the years with electrifying live performances throughout the US, Europe and Japan. Some of his recording and performance credits include Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Bruce Springsteen Sessions Band, Nile Rodgers and CHIC, They Might Be Giants, Radiohead, The Levon Helm Band, Glen Hansard and Little Steven.

The Story.
I thought that some people would be interested to know how this project was born, so I threw together a few words

Early in March, 2020 when many parts of the music business came to a screeching halt, I met reggae artist Clatta Bumboo through my friend Ray Gennari, when Clatta and Ray asked me to orchestrate and perform an instrumental version of one of Clatta Bumboo's recordings. I really enjoyed it, and they loved what I had done, so this led to doing several other horn arrangements for them.
By then, the “Damn-panic” was in full swing, so I had to face the fact that, for the foreseeable future, I wouldn’t be playing live shows, and definitely not touring. As a way to keep playing, and have some fun, Ray and I started to create new songs, similar in style to the first track I worked on with him and Clatta Bumboo.
Since we were in the throes of the pandemic, and we wouldn’t be able to assemble a large group of musicians in the studio, the challenge was to keep it organic, unforced and feeling like a live session - letting it swing a bit. We listened to a few drum tracks from Aston Barrett, Jr. (The Wailers) and Brady Robinson (Pentateuch Movement) that Ray had previously recorded, and felt they were “living and breathing” tracks we could use to build our songs.

Ray would play bass, guitar, and some keyboard parts to set up the arrangement and vibe, and send the track to me to write horn melodies and background brass parts. We bounced the ideas back and forth, sometimes three or four times - changing the form, adding a bridge, and deciding on endings. Being unable to work together in the studio in person, we talked constantly on the phone until the song was feeling complete. We continued this process for most of the Summer, and Ray and I were both thankful to have a fun and creative escape from the pressures of the pandemic, and the few people we had shared our creations with really loved the positive and uplifting vibe of the songs.
At this point, we decided it was time to share and spread this positivity, so we invited some friends to be part of our project, too. Bill Holloman (Nile Rodgers, Danny Gatton) added some saxophone parts, and Charlie Giordano (E Street Band) played piano on two songs, and even accordion on one. Noted reggae producer and performer Andrew “Moon” Bain (Lustre Kings, Zion I Kings) played some wah guitars on yet another song, and Andrew “Drew Keys” Stoch (Shaggy, Common Kings) added piano and organ to a track, too.
As things loosened up enough to where we could actually sit in the same room, we were able get some other local players and friends involved, first having Mike Dansereau in to overdub B-3 on almost everything, Tony Kid in to do some clavinet and synth overdubs, Michael Manglicmot in for a percussion session, and Scott Begin (Badfish) played drums for tune that we had written, but didn't have the appropriate drum track for. For the cherry on top of all of that, my son, Gerard, sent a sax solo for the opening song of the record from his home in California. Ray mixed all of the songs at his studio, and before we knew it, we had a collection of songs that felt like they belonged together on a record. I'm happy we created these songs, and we're proud to share them in the hope that they will help shine a little light going forward.
