Even if we completely disarm and forfeit this option, there's no guarantee our enemies will. Nuclear deterrents have been responsible for one of the greatest periods of relative peace in human history.

What we really need to do is to become a multiplanetary species, so we can remove the possibility of us all being wiped out once and for all.
