Cyanide & Happiness - Freakpocalypse is a rather raunchy point and click adventure game featuring dark satirical humor from the creators of the web comic.
The game feels like an episode of the comic come to life. You play the role of high school student Coop, the biggest loser humanity has ever seen. You are on a quest to avoid being bullied and score a date to prom. As always, things don't ever go as planned in the wacky world of Cyanide & Happiness.
The game plays like a rather standard point and click adventure game. You can move around the school and interact with objects and people. There is quite a bit of voice acted dialogue for even minor interactions with objects. You get side quests from talking to your fellow students and the questionable faculty. In order to complete those side quests, you go around and collect random objects and sometimes combine them together in seemingly random ways. Rubber chicken and pulley anyone?
There is a minor issue in that there seems to be too many people and objects you can interact with. This is not necessarily a con as it does increase immersion in the world but as a point and click adventure game it does dilute the experience because it vastly increases the number of objects (and time) you need to interact with before you can complete a quest. Most of the objects are there simply for the main character to say a short quip and move on so there really isn't a reason for them to be interactive in the first place.
Minor complaint aside, the game is a pretty hilarious adventure. The jokes are witty and sharp, and sometimes take a very dark turn. It depends on your sense of humor but some of the jokes do fall a bit short and fail to nail the punchline. There are plenty of jokes and gags that did get a chuckle out of me so there were definitely more hits than misses.
Overall, Cyanide & Happiness - Freakpocalypse makes for a good game for fans of the comic but not quite a good point and click adventure game. The game features the same art style as the comic and it looks fantastic in motion. Some of the jokes are spot on and the voice acting is well done. The game play does suffer a little bit from lacking focus and being diluted by too many things happening at once. Also, as a side note, the current release of the game features only episode one and there will be two more episodes released after this.
