In the game, it takes place in a city called "Night City" which is most likely either future Phoenix or Las Vegas. The reason why it may be one of those two cities in the future is because Night City's terrain is very deserty with desert plants that you would most likely see in Nevada or Arizona. But anyways, Night City was created by Richard Night in the 2010's after coming up with the city back in 1994. His goal for Night City was to basically be free of crime and to be controlled less by the government. He also wanted his city to be very diverse, mostly with the Japanese population. But after the US went into a heavy political war with Japan in the 2020's and 2030's, the Japanese citizens were kicked out of Night City and the Arasaka Hotel was shut down. Shortly after the political war broke out, multiple wars broke out all across the world. The wars ended up being so bad that nuclear bombs were detonated in many major cities and millions (if not billions) were injured and killed. Once the wars ended, nearly half of all the 50 states receded and formed and new Confederate States of America. Millions were jobless, food became scarce, and attacks kept getting worse. The President of the fallen United States Of America needed to do something about this. So she decided to get most of the states back and formed the New United States Of America or NUSA for short. Millions of people started getting body replacements since most of the good jobs dealt with radioactive or poisonous stuff. The NUSA made an alliance with Japan and became neutral again. They were allowed to live in Night City by the 2050's and the Arasaka Hotel was reopened to the public.
This was also during the time that America was rebuilding itself. You see, America lost billions of dollars and millions of lives during the many wars that they had. It was like the Great Depression, World War 1, World War 2, and 9-11 all combined with 10 times the damage and casualties. It's like your worse nightmare come true.
