I first bought Daikatana when it was released 14 years ago, but partly because of all the bad reviews the game got I didn't make much of an effort to complete more than the first few levels of Episode 1. Going back to the infamous shooter all these years later (and making more progress than I did when I originally checked it out) reinforces the notion that Daikatana is at the very least a very distinctive FPS. Even though the game *looked* dated when it was finally released in 2000 not many shooters back then had XP stats, semi-controllable AI partners and an ambitious time travel-based structure. Of the game's four time zones I've only seen sci-fi Japan and ancient Greece so far, but these environments feel completely different from each other in both level design, atmosphere, enemies and weaponry. It perhaps goes without saying when it comes to such an infamously protracted and messy development process as Daikatana's, but there's no denying that Ion Storm was aiming for the stars with this one...
