Damsel - Movie Review
"Damsel" (2024) directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo features a pretty questionable ending but other than that is extremely solid and above average especially for Netflix Original standards. The ending might be a little cool because of the visuals and music but the reason it's questionable is because the takeaway message is that murder / revenge is good and is the morally correct thing to do.
Our damsel is named Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown), and she has reluctantly agreed to marry a royal prince named Henry (Nick Robinson) in exchange for money to help her starving people. The marriage turns out to be a ploy, where the royal family has been forced by an evil dragon to sacrifice three daughters every so often to keep the beast happy. This also turns out to not be entirely true, as the dragon is not necessarily evil by default but instead is seeking revenge for the 3 children it lost at the hands of one of their past kings. Elodie is now tasked with trying to escape the beast's lair, but her survival is very unlikely . . .
Damsel may surprise you to be honest. At first glance you may see this as a potential feminist / female empowerment thing, but it's actually not really at all. The initial concept of the film was most likely to be a reverse gender role in which the damsel rescues her prince, but in my opinion / assumption they ended up changing directions during the creation of it to be something entirely different. What Damsel ends up being is a very solid bottle location survival scenario fantasy horror film that is basically singlehandedly better than the entire Peter Jackson Hobbit trilogy combined.
The film is incredibly authentic feeling in it's sets and locales, and the music is absolutely to die for. Visually, this is the single most impressive looking Netflix Original to date, I have never personally seen fire look this good in either a film or a video game before. The film's issues is a short list but they are fairly major problems to me. Just like the Hobbit trilogy, this story feels forcefully extended to feature length when it could really be told in a much shorter duration, also the film's themes are either hollow or negative, leaving you walking away wondering what exactly was going on in the director / writers' minds . . . Honestly I have a feeling that whoever was in charge of the ending is most likely pro-death sentence in real life.
Damsel is an extremely entertaining and visually impressive movie that is basically "free" since most of us have Netflix memberships already. I definitely recommend seeing this one especially if you are a fan of Millie Bobby Brown and or Peter Jackson films.
