Dancing with aurora timbies for the LORE | The Long Dark (Last Horizon update)
6The Last Horizon update to The Long Dark has dropped, and it's got something for everybody -- a new game mode built around suffering, a new mechanic that's so unpopular it's already been pulled, and a new zone rife with timberwolves and frigid weather. Sound familiar? Anywhoozleby, in this run we're taking the character we used to complete Buried Echoes and taking a crack at the final chapter of Tales from the Far Territory.
Just taking this character from the Island Cottage in Forsaken Airfield to the train depot in Transfer Pass ran into two blizzard, one spell of electrofog, and an aurora, so the trepidation started early. Getting into Sundered Pass from Transfer Pass requires a bit of a climb, so some vigorous inventory management is in order before we make the trip (20:20). I don't exaggerate when I say one of the best decisions I make in this stream came when I turned left at the fork in the road near the SP entrance instead of right (27:30). Taking the road involves no climbing, but it has plenty of other dangers. After spending the night in a cave named Miserable Haunt -- which is on the nose even by Hinterland's naming standards -- we stumble across the Last Lonely House (1:07:00), which doesn't have much in the way of loot but will come into play later. Another decent-sized climb takes us past a cool-looking ice cave (1:25:40) and a rather terrifying rope bridge crossing (1:28:30) before we reach our destination: the weather station (1:33:00).
After puttering around a bit and looting, we get an aurora that lets us advance the Tale (2:00:00). We get a key and a Polaroid that sends us back to the Last Lonely House, where unlocking the back room (2:35:30) nets us some decent loot and directs us to a broken settlement up the road we passed up at the start. After a lengthy hoof, it becomes clear why going left was an intelligent move -- timberwolves, and lots of them (3:09:30). After slipping past two packs of five timbies each, we find a third waiting just over a hill (3:21:00) with a bear not far behind. Fun times! We fight off two packs and retreat to a nearby shelter, but an aurora arrives soon after and the urge to progress the Tale wins out over my survival instincts. A miniature pack of two aurora timbies isn't enough to keep Astrid from finding Rudiger's hideout in a burned-out settlement (3:33:00). What she finds there indicates we have to climb even higher if we're going to get to the bottom of whatever is happening in the Far Territory, so strap in folks.
