5Some time ago, RadiantAnsel and I faced each other in a Darius Kumite ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ukv-aXCHtMc ) where we played Darius Extra on the bottom route (the only one I knew at the time), and Darius 2 on Very Hard difficulty (a difficulty level neither of us was familiar with). Back then, I got the win. My familiarity with the bottom route was likely what helped me the most, as it can be quite a devious route in some of the stages. Underwater zone J can be treacherous with all the hidden missile traps for instance.
This was a few years ago now. However, RadiantAnsel recently asked for a Darius Extra rematch! The gauntlet has been thrown. Since last time we played on a route I knew well, I thought it was only fair we would now play on his turf, his usual route where he goes for scoring : the top route with Great Thing at the end. I am the away team this time!
It is a great thing this duel is going to be a thing since I haven't played the game much since and an opportunity to learn new routes sounds good to me. While the bottom route's hard stages were kinda obvious to me, the top route seems more misleading in difficulty when initially tackling it, where zones that seemed simple can be tricky and vice-versa. Zone B gives lots of shields but losing them all later on seemed inevitable. Despite this, I managed to overcome most obstacles and got a clear!
I initially had issues with zones D, K and P, but was able to solve them thanks to either 30Hz rapidfire and good positioning, or securing Wave in the case of P since that stage really feels intended for a wall-penetrating weapon and is a million times harder with laser instead.
The main remainging challenges are zone G since that one stays tricky no matter what and you don't want to miss out on too many red power items, Keen Bayonet since bad positionning like in my fight is a heavy shield tax, and Great Thing itself because I don't know how to handle it best yet. For this final boss, I tried to pointblank cheese as much as I could but I know the boss could crush me if I stayed below him the whole time. I ran out of shield eventually anyways and had to leave. I thought I would die trying to dodge his attacks...but I managed to hold it until the boss' health got emptied by my wave shots. Phew.
It was fun and I'll have to keep practicing and improving consistency on this for whenever we do our duel!
