Darkspore Beta gameplay
0Here is some footage of the beta for a game called Darkspore. This isn't the easiest game to describe yet. It feels like it is a mish mash of some games we all know and love.
It has some elements of Spore (which I never played), Torchlight (the sounds of the vials dropping sounds like Torchlight's potions), Diablo 1/2, Starcraft, Metroid Prime Hunters, VIndictus, Marvel Alliance and more. From what I know of the game so far, you pick a squad of genetically enhanced "Darkspore" creatures and form a party of 3. While doing missions, you can swap your creatures in and out on a small cool down. Each creature type is either green, yellow, purple, red or blue. You want to make sure you don't pick a creature that is the same type as a lot of mobs in the mission (odd that same colors have this synergy and not opposite colors).
If you've played lots of MMO, RPG and MMORPG style games, you'll recognize the stylings quickly. I felt my green guy was a hunter/healer. The purple spider felt like a warlock. The yellow guy was a bit like a tank and the red one (my original) was like a DPS warrior. Your creatures gain hero levels by equipping them with better gear and you, as the controller of all of them, gain levels too. Higher levels give you perks like access to other heroes, ability to form more than one squad and more.
Currently the beta is a tad buggy since I've fallen out of sync on occasion. The loot system is interesting with a risk/reward style choice at the end of missions. Collect loot now or double down and hold off to the end of another successful mission. The game features PVP (I think your squad vs others), solo campaigns and multi-player co-op campaigns.
The game is being created by Maxxis and EA.
