When last we left our adventurers—Vayu the Air Genasi Rogue, Ronzi the Halfling Artificer, Brytmora the Hill Dwarf Bloodhunter, and Snaps the Kenku Cleric—they had just decided to set a careful watch on the orphanage, hoping to catch sight of the ominous “purple orb” that had been in contact with the missing child Lukas. Their vigilance paid off in a surprising way when a lone rowboat—previously reported missing—drifted back down the river and up to the orphanage’s dock. From it emerged a single rat, oddly confident and seemingly with a purpose. The party quickly sprang into action and managed to trap the creature, only to discover it was no ordinary rat—it was a transformed ten-year-old Halfling boy named Cornelius, who proudly introduced himself as the Royal Rat Vanguard.
Cornelius, though cheeky and a little skittish, revealed he had been sent by someone known only as "Mother" and offered to escort the group to her home in the north, to a place called the Vernal Den, nestled in a massive cliffside. The group took to the river in the very boat Cornelius arrived in, rowing steadily northward through deep wilderness. Along the way, a towering 100-foot cliff loomed above them, triggering a strange and unshakable fear in Vayu, though she couldn't say why. Eventually, the river path narrowed between two great stone walls, and a trail presented itself—leading upward, toward the top. After a final stretch of travel, they laid eyes on their destination: a colossal, ancient tree hollowed out into a vast dwelling. Inside, they found a peculiar and enchanting home filled with mismatched trinkets, arcane oddities, and a community of curious and intelligent rats. This, they soon learned, was the domain of the elusive and unnerving figure known as Mother.
