Hello everyone today we're taking a look at a couple of navigation systems in the Hornet:
1 ADF or the automatic direction finder.
2 TACAN or tactical air navigation.
3 Waypoint system.
ADF is probably one of the oldest but also most simple navigation systems out there and all its really doing is using one of the two
radio's in the Hornet to home in bearing wise towards a ground beacon.
ADF Steps: (Exercise)
1. Set one of the two radios. to the manual seeing in this
2. Set comm 1.
3. Set the ADF switch to either
4. In the scratchpad (ICP). clear button.
5. Enter the ADF frequency 1 1 3 6 0 0.
6. It will be indicated by the small circle on the outside of the compass giving bearing information towards that beacon you can also hear the code (Beep).
7. There is NO range or DME information.
TACAN Steps: (Exercise).
1. Select TCAN on the DDI.
2. Track USC and you will have 3 track camp options:
A: Transmit receive - Provide its bearing and range information to attack in station.
B: Received - Bearing information
c: Air-to-Air - is only for other aircraft like tanker and it will only give range information.
3. Select transmit receive and turn the system on clear it out.
4. Select hockey which is on 31 x-ray.
5. Observe DDI and the corner we see we have a bearing of 270 for a range of eleven point three eight nautical miles it's time to go is one minute 17 seconds.
6. The three-digit code inside we have the actual icon of for the tack hand station zoom a little bit and the T with around of the triangle around it is our bearing with the tail on the other end now appear on the HUD we have the distance in the code.
7. Pressing the course which we can put a course based on that station.
8. 274 displays a course line towards that tacking station.
9. Observe in the HUD an arrow and the two dots indications how far off to course line.
10. The first dot is four degrees and the second dot is eight degrees and attacking is going to be very useful for lining up your approach to a runway and aircraft carrier. l1. Navigate to DDI and with the load button displays different ways to place the data on the DDI.
12. First, we have track up we can go north up we can D Center it and we can also go ahead and go to the data page.
13 Select a Tacan and using the up adown arrows you can select all the different tack and station's stored in database.
14. Go ahead and select one to USC.
15. Adjust geographic, elevation and magnetic variance.
16. Navigate back to HSI and also may hear the tech hand Morse at any point.
17. Go to the volume panel and we can adjust increase/decrease volume control.
