After escaping the island of Banoi in Dead Island, the survivors arrive at an aircraft carrier as a monsoon carries the zombie infection from the original island on board and the infection spreads once again. Sam B, Logan Carter, Xian Mei, and Purna, all playable protagonists from the first game, destroy the carrier. The team is forced to look for safety and reach the nearby island of Palanoi, finding that the island has also been infected, and the team begin a fight for survival; also joined by new protagonist John Morgan.
