Obtain the gatling gun from the armored car. This is obtained from the convicts that arrive outside of Paradise Plaza after 6pm on day one. They can be easily defeated by picking up the shotgun during the barricade the mall part at the beginning of the game (one of the people near the barricades drops a shotgun when the zombies kill him). The katana also makes short work of the escaped prisoners. The katana can be found near where you meet the other photographer Ken (jump down to the awning near the orange juice refrigerator to find the katana).
