The Ishimura is in the middle of its 35th planetcrack when it is infested by an alien species known as Necromorphs. Players take on the role of Isaac, an engineer, and must fight their way through the ship using improvised weapons and navigating weightless and decompressed environments. The game features an 'over the shoulder' third-person perspective and emphasizes dismemberment as a means of defeating enemies. It also features a unique interface, relaying information to the player through lights and translucent screens.
