Dead Space playthrough Part 1
0I did mention that I would be doing more modern games starting this year. And, while this game is still ten years old today, it's more recent than most of the games I've played before. Dead Space. It's been in the news a bit 'lately', as EA killed the studio behind it a few month ago. Yet another of the pile of corpses in EA's mass grave. They're also currently giving this game away for free as part of their On The House program if you have an Origin account. Though I am playing the Steam version personally.
So far, I've only completed the first two chapters, but I am enjoying what I see. There's definite influences you can see in this game - System Shock, John Carpenter's The Thing, Event Horizon - not to mention just the entire "survival horror" genre as a whole. But so far at least things have been mixed well. The atmosphere is good, and they haven't done a lot of the easy jump scares that one's grown to expect from these games. Quite the opposite, they seem to be relying on the atmosphere to really sell it. And, while I'm usually not someone who gets full sucked into such atmospheres, this one's been doing a good job with a lot of nice little details. And some moments of "why is this a thing?"
