In Dungeons and Dragons characters die. What is the point of being an adventurer if there is no risk to those adventures. The Dm or GM has the tricky job of presenting just enough danger and threat for the players feel like their choices matter. If a player in a game or campaign makes really poor choices they may pay the ultimate price. On the plus side when one of my characters perishes I get to dive back into the players handbook for another round of character creation.
