Originally released for the PS4 and PS4 Pro back in 2019, Death Stranding takes place several years after catastrophic events have left several cities in isolation. It’s up to protagonist Sam Bridges to travel the nation and re-forge those connections. To help him, he’ll have a Bridge Baby or B.B. which helps Sam to see the Beached Things, strange entities that have a monstrous form.

Now Sony has released the Director's Cut which adds additional content and PS5 specific features. We recently got the chance to test the game's performance on the PS5 and PS4 Pro and we have a few things to share. But, a quick note before we go ahead. We analysed the performance by taking some sample scenes from the game and running it through trdrop, an open source software. This tool gives us a mere demonstration of the game’s performance, because an exact 1:1 representation of performance can only be provided by the developers themselves, since they have access to a vast array of tools and profilers.

In terms of PS5 specific features, Death Stranding Director's Cut offers two different graphics modes: Quality mode, which runs at 4K and 60 FPS, and Performance Mode, running in 1800p and targeting 60 FPS. On the PS4 Pro, the game runs at 2160p at 30 frames per second and largely sticks to that target.

The Quality mode on PS5 however does have some issues with noticeable drops in performance, while the frame rate was stable in Performance mode. Death Stranding Director's Cut also takes advantage of the new console's SSD resulting in loading times that are several times faster compared to the PS4 Pro. We will leave you with more frame rate tests and comparisons, so check them out and let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. Also, let us know what game you want us to test next.
