Defender (Arcade version | Red Label)

“Defender” is an arcade video game developed by Williams in 1980, and it is a side-scrolling shooting game. In addition to being the world’s first scrolling shooting game, it has had a significant influence on subsequent shooting games.

The player controls their own ship with a two-way lever (up and down) and five buttons. The lever and the direction change button above it are operated with the left hand. The right hand is responsible for the four buttons (warp, acceleration, shot and smart bomb).

The movement of the player’s ship is possible in the up and down direction only with the lever, but the left and right direction is switched by the direction change button, and it moves in that direction with the acceleration button, so it takes time to get used to it.

The shot can be fired at a very high speed with a very long one. It has become a standard expression of lasers in subsequent shooting games.

The smart bomb is a powerful weapon that instantly wipes out all enemies on the screen, but there is a limit to the number of uses (it only increases by one with each ship every 10,000 points, so if you use more than one per stage clear, you will run out quickly).

When you use warp, you move randomly within the map. There is no limit to the number of times you can use warp, and it can be used for emergency evasion and high-speed movement, but since the destination is random and the ship stops immediately after warping, if there are enemies near the warp destination, you will be killed at a high probability.

Detailed information about the map (terrain, your ship, enemies, humans. In other words, all character positions) is displayed at the top of the screen to prevent game breakdown due to high-speed scrolling.

The rule is to clear all enemies on the map, but this game has a point where not only do you just beat up enemies, but an enemy called Lander always tries to take humans on the ground to the top of the screen. If they are taken to the topmost part, Lander will merge with humans and transform into Mutant (enemy), and they will fly at high speed and attack your ship. The way to rescue humans is to beat Lander while they are being taken away and return them safely to the ground. At this time, if humans fall from a certain height and crash into the ground, they will die, so you need to overlap your ship with falling humans and take them to the ground. Also, if you shoot humans, they will die (there is no penalty). It’s not an immediate miss or game over if all humans are wiped out, but when it changes from a ground defense scene where all Landers have changed into Mutants from the beginning due to an explosion on the ground surface to a combat scene in space, it becomes difficult to clear. However, humans revive every five stages and return to ground defense scenes.
When clearing, if you protect all humans on the map, you can get bonus points according to the number of people.
