VS. Clu Clu Land (Arcade version)


“VS. Clu Clu Land” is a game developed by Nintendo, but they have some differences. “Clu Clu Land” was originally released for the Family Computer (Famicom), while “Vs. Clu Clu Land” was developed for Nintendo’s VS arcade hardware. Both games have the same basic gameplay, where the player controls a spherical creature to navigate a maze and uncover hidden gold. However, “Vs. Clu Clu Land” has additional elements not found in the original “Clu Clu Land”. For example, it makes full use of the large ROM area, which is even larger than the ROM cassette version, and there are many additional elements. “Vs. Clu Clu Land” includes additional content such as new gold nugget arrangements, changes in stage BGM, lengthening of bonus stage BGM, appearance of boss Unira, addition of an indicator of the current stage number during the game, etc.

The protagonist is constantly moving forward and can change direction by grabbing onto poles (turn posts) arranged in a grid and spinning around them.

When player passes between two poles, if there’s a hidden gold nugget there, it will appear. However, there are also rubber traps that can bounce the player back, and after that, you can no longer pass through that area. The stage is cleared when all the hidden gold nuggets on that stage have been revealed.

There are also enemy characters called Unira that the player must avoid. If Bubbles (the player) touches a Unira, you lost a life. But Bubbles can also stun Unira by firing shock waves and then defeat them by pushing them into a wall. If Bubbles falls into a hole (black hole) from which Unira appear, it’s also a miss. However, if Bubbles is holding onto a pole, she can pass over the hole.
The game ends when Bubbles runs out of lives due to misses. In a two-player game, the player who collects more gold nuggets receives bonus points.
