Demon's Tier+ Game Sample - PS4
You know what? I kinda like these throwback games from Diabolical Mind and Fabrice Breton (aka COWCAT). Having first heard of DM through their game, Xenon Valkyrie, they would later collaborate with CC on improved console ports of all their games which, to date, include Riddled Corpses EX and Demon's Tier+. While the PC iterations of the games were more rough around the edges, the console versions got many small and important quality of life changes to round out the experiences. This is great for gamers but a bit of a double-edged sword for the devs... on one hand, it's cool that these game's would get additional upgrades at no additional cost to the consumer, but on the other hand, not all of these upgrades would make it to their PC counterparts, so if you aren't the type to double-dip, you would more than likely hold off on buying their games to wait for the inevitable upgrade. At any rate, Demon's Tier+ is a twin-stick arcade-style dungeon roguelike that isn't too long or too difficult, but it's an addictive little game that also features co-op gameplay and a light story with different endings based on the various "Tiers" you complete. All the females are also well-endowed for some reason...
As a brave knight, you and your entourage are tasked by the King of Argom with investigating Bendel Town and the lost underground kingdom it sits on top of. Over 1200 years ago, this area was part of a vast kingdom ruled by King Thosgar and his only remaining kin, Princess Galenya. Over the years, the King has gone blind and mad in his old age, eventually bringing his kingdom to ruin and having his body and soul consumed by the forces of darkness. His castle now sleeps deep underground and has transformed into a sprawling monster den where his subjects and their immortal souls have become demons who are gradually seeking to take control of the world above. Your team will clear three different tiers of the underground with varying difficulty and fight numerous bosses as well as go through a few randomly-generated levels with a few random victory conditions.
The game starts out pretty straight-forward with only the knight as a playable character and plenty of rope to get back to town as you are eased into the game's mechanics, but the more you explore, the more features you access. You can unlock an item shop to get useful items for your journey as well as a blacksmith who forges weapons for you from recipes you find. Each character has different statistics and a special skill unique to them, and they can upgrade their stats after each dungeon level by spending gold, which resets after each visit. D-Coins are another form of currency which you keep even after leaving the dungeon (unless you are killed, then you have one chance to retrieve them or they are lost forever) and are used for important upgrades such as valuable consumable goods and permanent upgrades such as extra playable characters and weapons for each main character (the two unlockable bonus characters have very high base stats as they don't get weapon upgrades). Unlike Xenon Valkyrie or a typical roguelike, these weapons are not randomized pickups on your quest; purchasing them allows you to keep them permanently and use them freely, and part of the replayability comes from completionists trying to get each class' ultimate weapon to smite evil.
Compared to most roguelikes, this game is very easy and somewhat short -- if you are remotely decent at twinstick games, you can get some decent characters after your third visit to the dungeon and if you use the cleric with a good weapon or the unlockable valkyrie, you can easily clear the game with their healing abilities. Even the other classes become more than capable when outfitted with a good weapon and some healing potions (The knight is tanky, the archer has great range, the wizard's spell does massive damage and can recharge very quickly if you max out your mana, etc.) and each run allows you to get plenty of D-coins as long as you have at least one or two silver keys to free prisoners; they give you some much needed additional firepower as well as a large D-Coin bonus for each floor. The game can be cleared in as little as about 2.5-4hrs. The "+" in DT+ is not just for show either, as it includes a lot of improvements over the base game.
