Demonstration - Analogue Mega Sg with 32x and Analogue DAC
Analogue's Mega Sg is compatible with the Sega 32x add-on for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, but the Mega Sg cannot work with the 32x without help. Mega Sg is HDMI-only but Analogue will soon be releasing Analogue DAC. Analogue DAC is a special digital to analog converter that provides high quality RGB, Component, S-Video, Composite and audio output for Mega Sg and Super Nt. Due to the nature of the 32x's operation, which requires am RGB+sync video signal from the Genesis to be mixed in with the 32x's video signal, Analogue DAC is required to use the 32x with Mega Sg.
This video demonstrates several of the more well-known games for the 32x being run on Mega Sg + 32x + DAC. The games are being run off a Mega EverDrive X7, except for the last, which is a Sega CD 32x game run on an attached Sega CD Model 2. Here are the timestamps for each game :
Star Wars Arcade - 0:00
DOOM - 3:26
Virtua Racing Deluxe - 6:31
Kolibiri - 10:18
Knuckles Chaotix - 14:51
Night Trap 32x - 27:14
In addition to Analogue DAC, a few more pieces of are required hardware to produce this capture. A custom cable must be made which goes from the Analogue DAC (which uses a "VGA" 15-pin port) to the 32's AV Input (which uses the Genesis 2's 9-pin mini-din). The HD Retrovision Genesis YPbPr Component Cable took the combined video from Mega Sg and 32x to a Datapath VisionRGB E1s capture card (via a Monoprice Component to VGA dongle and a VGA to DVI converter).
For Knuckles Chaotix the CRAM Dots were enabled, the option was disabled when the other games were captured. Horizontal colored borders were not captured due to oversight, but Analogue DAC does show them both for 32x and Mega Sg. The capture card captured at 640x240. Capturing at 2x the horizontal resolution gives a better quality capture with the Datapath and the 32x. Because the Sega Genesis and Sega 32x output 427.5 pixels per line (including active pixels, border color and non-visible pixels, it is best to use 855 as the horizontal size.
If you look very closely at DOOM's status bar, you will see random purple pixels down the extreme left edge of the status bar. That artifact can be fixed by a setting in the DAC menu called 32x Picture Alignment. I forgot to adjust it before capturing.
The 32x was modded with Kevtris' mod, detailed here : https://www.retrorgb.com/sega-32x-video-noise-fix-by-kevtris.html designed to eliminate the video interference caused by Sega's inadequate switching power supply design. Everything else is stock.
