Derek Parra - KSL Segment - February 6, 2012
This is a news segment about Derek Parra's career 10 years after the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics, just before the Olympic cauldron there was relit in celebration of the Vancouver 2012 Winter Olympics. It focuses on how the 2002 Olympics affected his skating career afterward, especially with coaching the Utah Olympic Oval's short track speed skating club (of which I was a part of from 2009 - 2017, and can be seen in this segment). Notable skaters seen in this segment are K.D. Todd and Benjamin Thornock. I wish I remembered who else was there that day.
Derek Parra was the first Mexican-American to win a gold medal, setting a new world record at the time in the 1500m final on February 19, 2002. He broke the newly set world record by Jochem Uytdehaage of the Netherlands. Derek also won a silver medal in the 5000m 10 days earlier, setting a world record before Jochem Uytdehaage broke it just a few races afterward.
