For all its axes D3 never quite leaves the ground...I remember this being a lot better of a game, but I partly blame that on the tiny FOV. Makes you miss 90 degrees! Sound is always challenging for some reason but I think I'm mixed okay -- tad quiet in some places.
All told, D3 is...good-not-great. Conceptually adventurous in expanding the Descent name in a mechanical and plot sense, but kind of falls flat all over the place and doesn't capture the feel of the original two games.
D3 also *looks* 1999. Think of a generic shooter from the era and you're getting this plastic beauty. Part of its charm and timelessness is how well it captures and inseparably assimilates with the late 90's aesthetic in its own distinct way.
Definitely an...entry...in the series? 'It's the Pre-Sequel of Descent!' actually doesn't sound terribly incorrect in a lot of ways. Copies and expands the original mechanics but changes basically nothing...and the story is (generously) not great. Divisive, creative, and always underrated. Perfectly serviceable and perfectly average.
