Descent (D1X-Rebirth) playthrough Part 1
And here we are with the 1995 classic, Descent. Those who've watched my channel may remember the RPG using this very engine, Descent to Undermountain, and it should give you some idea as to WHY that game didn't really work too well.
This, however, is what the engine was literally built for. And with D1X-Rebirth, we get more compatibility on modern machines, higher resolution, and better controller support. The original engine could only handle four axes, whereas the 360 controller has five. (Two on the left stick, two on the right stick, and the triggers are actually a combined axis as well.) Without the source port, the left stick's left/right and up/down are treated as the same axis, making it hard to work with. However, rebirth lets me use them properly, giving me good dual-stick controls.
And it really opens the game up. Once you get it set in a way that's natural and comfortable, the game starts to become much nicer. This, honestly, was the main reason why I never finished this game before. The controls. But that's no longer an issue here.
What is an issue is the difficulty. Yes, the game has lives, and yes, you can use deaths to your advantage. But I am an old school gamer with a "no deaths" mindset. So that is my mission, to try to complete every mission without dying, as difficult as that is. So far, up through the first boss at level 7, I have completed that task. But it wasn't easy, particularly that boss. Here's hoping I can keep up the streak! -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/the_nametag
